TILE IS TAKING WALL DESIGN to new levels

Photography courtesy of brands

TILE DESIGNERS are reimagining what tile means in a room, the impact it can have, and, with these styles, how it can bring the outdoors in. Move over, murals and wallpaper, tile is taking a stab at becoming the new go-to wall covering treatment with mosaic murals and large-format porcelain tiles adorned with colors and materials to create the look of fine art.

French Deco, a hand-cut jewel glass mosaic shown in jewel Absolute White and honed Dawn Mirror, is part of the Gracie collection for New Ravenna.

Linda’s Garden, a hand-cut mosaic shown in Agate, Amber, Citrine, Peridot, Alexandrite, Jade, Opal, Schist, Lavastone, Tourmaline, Labradorite, Zircon, Tortoise Shell, Champagne and Moonstone jewel glass with Sea Glass™ Serpentine, is part of the Gracie collection for New Ravenna.

Both styles are made to measure.

THE BOTANIC WORLD comes alive in this fine art–inspired collection by designer Paula Purroy. A variety of materials, including glass plus real silver and gold, are applied to the oversized tiles, which are fired between every application. While there are high-tech aspects to production, artisans are involved in selecting colors and materials, creating expandable works of art with the lifelike look of a painting or mural rendered in porcelain.

It comes in 24 by 48–inch tiles, $48.95/sq.ft.
