WINDING UP AND OVER Guanella Pass, visitors are treated to above-tree-line beauty—Guanella Pass, with Mount Bierstadt looming to the east, wrapped in 14er allure, and secret campsites and dirt trails snaking into lands unknown to the west. At some point on the twisting rise-and-fall drive, cell service disappears, and the radio fades to static.
A rarity for many screen-saturated childhoods (though plenty of kids might argue they’re the “only 11-yearold without a smartphone”), the quiet transition feels almost unnoticed. The route leads to the 23-acre Tumbling River Ranch, where spotty Wi-Fi, limited cell service, and zero televisions are among the property’s biggest selling points for families seeking unplugged connection time.
In today’s hyperconnected world of mindless scrolling, bottomless inboxes, and endless to-do lists, the historic Grant property feels like it’s onto something. Perched at 9,200 feet within the 1-million-acre Pike National Forest and Mount Evans Wilderness, Tumbling River Ranch is fresh off an $8 million renovation and has lovingly positioned itself as a prime digital detox destination—perfect for reconnecting with the people who matter most.
As guests cross the narrow wooden bridge—perhaps in an electric vehicle that staff thoughtfully offers to plug in if needed—they’re greeted by John, the ranch’s smiling guest services manager and head of activities, waving them down from an ATV. He leads the way to the base of the main lodge, where a helpful valet takes the keys. With meals, hikes, archery, horseback riding, and hot tubs all on-site, there’s little reason to drive again until checkout.
A friendly property tour reveals charmed touches lingering from the ranch’s 1946 roots—21 rooms are stylishly carved into vintage cabins plumped with plush bedding, gas fireplaces, and clawfoot tubs; a barrel sauna and cedar hot tubs beckon from the edge of rushing Geneva Creek; and three family-style meals a day unfold in front of the lodge’s floor-to-ceiling windows with views of Twin Cones Peaks.
A pony named Biscuit grazes in the adjacent pasture with a group of donkeys. Five wranglers manage the ranch’s 28 horses and happily schedule trail rides for guests. Not to worry, they assure, the resort carries cowboy boots in every size for the full Western experience.
If horseback riding isn’t on the itinerary, John and concierge Coco can also arrange whitewater rafting, rock climbing, or fly-fishing excursions.
During sunset hour, adults order old-fashioneds and sip from the global wine list while kiddos head to the activity barn to tie-dye shirts and use branding irons to burn Tumbling River Ranch logos into wooden blocks. Archery quickly becomes a favorite pastime, with John enthusiastically coaching first-timers as arrows find their mark in the hay bale targets.
Over venison filets and parmesan potatoes, families naturally mingle, lingering over tiramisu dessert before heading downstairs for rounds of Scrabble and shuffleboard in the game room.
Woven blankets cradle guests from Adirondack chairs around the firepit while ranch hosts share stories of Colorado’s iconic Coors family homesteading the very land explored during the day’s hikes. John sets up his famous campfire popcorn bar, and everyone helps themselves to sodas and craft beer from the vintage Coca-Cola cooler.
After hopping between the hot tubs and the homemade river cold plunge, it’s hard not to notice the birdsong or watch the moon rise above the cabins. Small touches—like a pouch of Legos left on a child’s pillow during turndown service or the resident bunny that young guests inevitably name—encourage families to slow down and simply be together.
Without the pull of televisions or reliable cell service, evenings end with books instead of screens and conversations instead of notifications. Sleep comes easily. No sound machine. No meditation app. No final email check. Just sweet, forested slumber.
