Katie Schroederof Atelier Interior Design had been slowly redesigning this home for several years. When the homeowners entered retirement recently, they finally committed to remodeling the primary bathroom. “They’d been dreaming about this remodel for decades,” Schroeder says. “They wanted something lovely to look at and enjoy during retirement.” To accomplish the look and feel of a “rad hotel,” as Schroeder puts it, without breaking the budget, she kept the same layout, only moving the bathtub plumbing slightly. She selected marble-look porcelain hexagon tiles for the floor and, to add visual interest, a pale blue textured tile for the shower walls. Schroeder replaced an outdated storage cabinet with a floor-to-ceiling, built-in armoire.
The vanity area is designed for maximum impact. Built-in, mirrored storage features lighting and interior outlets for plugging in razors, electric toothbrushes and more. The swing-up doors add a modern edge. But the wall is the pièce de résistance in this space. Schroeder selected an ombre-style mosaic tile to accentuate the ceiling height and create a stunning focal point. It’s a very dark blue at the peak and fades to a soft blue similar to the shower tile as it meets the countertop, where under-mount sinks feature brushed gold fixtures. Rad hotel, indeed.
